My training is in experimental psychology and my original research interests were particularly in the effects of neurological disease upon the control of fast eye movements (saccades). I've subsequently become involved in broader topics related to Parkinson’s disease, such as its epidemiology and the risk of hallucinations and cognitive decline. This has been enabled by the long-standing participation in our research programme by more than 300 local people with Parkinson's and their families. Recently I've also become involved in studying the epidemiology of multiple sclerosis. I also have a strong interest in scientific computing, particularly in using R and Python to both conduct and analyse experiments.

I've had the pleasure of supervising a large number of doctoral, masters, and BMedSc thesis students. These students have come from a variety of disciplines, including medicine, psychology, physiotherapy, physics, and radiography. Topics have ranged from eye and hand movement control to brain imaging, neuropsychological testing, hallucinations, and clinical assessment.

Undeterred by the seismically-active environment here in Canterbury, I live in a house supported by poles, perched on a cliff inside a volcano. In the weekends, I can occasionally be found plodding up and down, or paddling around, the slopes of that volcano.
